Four score and seven years ago, two people from entirely different worlds had a chance meeting. He was a Brit who was on the cusp of turning 31, whilst she was an Aussie who had just turned 30. They were drawn together by an apparently accidental collision caused by a virus called Atlantis that struck an online journal provider called Blog City in November 2004. Well, so it's not really four score and seven years ago, but sometimes it's seemed that way, so why split too many hairs?
In any case, a friendship developed between the two of them. Although they had been brought up in environments that were seemingly alien to one another - after all, she had been hanging upside down from the world so long that she had started to think that she really was a monkey - they found out that they had a few things in common. E-mails flew back and forth until the fateful Christmas Eve when he introduced her to Instant Messaging. This little encounter ended up in a conversation that lasted until 5am Christmas morning.
Times, they have changed. Those two people were obviously Jon and I ... those of you who have known us for a long time would have followed the ups and downs of our friendship, which gradually turned into a long-distance relationship until we finally took the plunge, and decided to live together when he came here to visit me in April this year.
He's going to kill me when he sees this (as I'm fond of telling him that he's incapable of keeping a secret to himself), but seeing as both our families now know, I can't keep my trap shut any longer because my excitement will not be contained. After living on the same continent for the past four months, we've decided that we can no longer do without one another on a more permanent basis. As such, we're getting married in my hometown on 24 August.
Whoever would have thought that I would become an Internet bride? I can assure you, it was an option that had certainly never crossed my mind. I'm sure that one day, there will be an organisation for people such as my good self that represent a phenomenon that rather puts me in mind of GI brides post World War II. After all, if 13% of people are now in long-term relationships as a result of meeting someone on the Internet, we're obviously not the only ones ... one day, we'll unite and be a force that will take over the world! I wonder if we're the first Blog City marriage? We could become the poster children of the latest Blog City promotion. Join Blog City now and find your future spouse!
However, prior to planning this advertising campaign, not to mention global domination, the next few weeks are going to be jam-packed full of preparations - what with clothes to buy, the reception at my parents' home to organise, the honeymoon to plan and all the other mutinae that comes as part and parcel of the nuptial ritual, it's going to be very hectic. Nonetheless, I'm quite looking forward to all the hubbub, which is rather unusual for me. It's actually going to be a lot of fun ... not only on the day, but hopefully for years and years to come.
In a post-script, I must give my apologies to those of you that I misled regarding this situation. I had been asked point blank if we were getting married, and had denied it. However, I didn't feel it was appropriate to tell anyone of what had transpired before we had notified our families of our intentions.
Congratulations!!!! *throwing a bowl of rice at Kim*

So, if I could get the time off work and could afford the plane ticket and
hotel accomodations, can I come to the wedding? ;) Internet romances are
great, aren't they?
